The ‘Gifted’ Program at St Clare’s - an Inclusive Classroom Approach
St Clare’s College aims to cater for all students in their academic and social development and has a number of structures and processes in place for students who have been identified as having special gifts and talents.
Identification and Curricular Opportunities
Students are nominated as having gifts and talents by parents, teachers, counsellors and potentially their peers. This information is disseminated to all Faculties for distribution to the teachers of these students. These teachers will then monitor the progress of those students in their classes and set tasks that cater for their specific needs. This is all done with appropriate regard for the privacy of the individual.
Each faculty also widely advertises elective subject-specific opportunities that provide stimulating, challenging activities for students who wish to participate.
Extra Curricular
Students at St Clare’s have the opportunity to develop their talents in an extensive range of extra curricular activities. Debating, Choir, Band, Tournament of Minds, Representative Sport, and the Shakespeare Festival are just some of the many offered.
Support
Information on activities for gifted students run by external organizations is advertised in St Clare’s newsletter, Tidings. The NSW Association for Gifted and Talented Children (www.nswagtc.org.au) is a valuable source of information, as is GERRIC, the Gifted Education Research Resource and Information Centre at the School of Education, NSW University.
The Gifted program is faculty based. It is facilitated by the Student Support Unit, and implemented by the teachers within each Department.
